The coating reduces glare and protects your eyes from UV rays, and increases the definition and clarity of an object. Most compact binoculars provide a wide field view and bright images.
But when magnification is increased in binoculars, the brightness as well as the field of view decreases. If performance is your main consideration, full sized binoculars are preferred. Five pound binoculars will get heavy fairly fast.
Even if you aren't planning on taking your new binoculars on the water, consider spending a few extra dollars on a pair that has waterproof housing. Binoculars are wonderful for any sporting events, or children's activities.
